John R. Hughes

John Hughes has been practicing law for over 34 years. A native of Huron, South Dakota, John received his bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University in 1979. He received his law degree with distinction, from the University of Nebraska Law School in 1982. Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Hughes was elected by the law faculty to The Order of the Coif, a national legal honorary society whose members have achieved “high attainments in the study of Law.” John served as the Executive Editor of the Nebraska Law Review. He is a member of the South Dakota and Nebraska State Bar Associations, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (now the American Association for Justice), the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. He holds the AV Preeminent Peer Rating by Martindale Hubbell in the areas of Medical Malpractice, Personal Injury, Estate Planning and Business Law. He represents clients who have diverse, comprehensive, and complex needs for legal services. Practicing mainly in the areas of business, civil litigation, medical malpractice, adoptions, serious personal injury, wrongful death, and municipal law, he has served as City Attorney of Baltic, South Dakota, since 1996. John and his wife Beth, Adoption Coordinator for Hughes Law Office, have been married for 37 years, and have three grown sons.
