Meet Our Staff
John Hughes has been practicing law for over 34 years. A native of Huron, South Dakota, John received his bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University in 1979. He received his law degree, with distinction, from the University of Nebraska Law School in 1982. Practicing mainly in the areas of business, civil litigation, medical malpractice, adoptions, serious personal injury, wrongful death, and municipal law, he has served as City Attorney of Baltic, South Dakota, since 1996. John and his wife Beth, Adoption Facilitator for Hughes Law Office, have been married for 35 years, and have three grown sons. Read more.
Stuart was born and raised in Sioux Falls. Following his graduation from Lincoln High School, he attended South Dakota State University, and the University of South Dakota School of Law. He is licensed in State and Federal Court in South Dakota, and also the State of Minnesota.
Following his graduation from law school, Stuart worked as a law clerk in the First Judicial Circuit of South Dakota, where he assisted the judges with matters of local, state, and national significance. Stuart joined Hughes Law Office in 2016, and currently lives in Sioux Falls with his wife and two sons.
Stuart’s practice is devoted to representing clients in personal injury and other civil disputes. He also represents those charged in criminal cases in both State and Federal Court. He is a member of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel of attorneys practicing in Federal Court, and adheres to the guiding principle that “The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned.”- Bryan Stevenson.
Beth Hughes is the adoption coordinator for the Hughes Law Office. Whether the firm is representing the expectant mother or adoptive couple, Beth works hard to make sure that those involved are respected and informed through all phases of the adoption process. A native of Tripp, South Dakota, Beth graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree from South Dakota State University. She worked for seven years in television and radio news broadcasting in Omaha, Nebraska, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before taking a work hiatus to be a stay-at-home mom to her and John’s three sons.
Hannah is a Sioux Falls native. After graduating from Yale with an MFA degree, Hannah lived and worked in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago for four years before moving home to South Dakota. She has been coordinating adoptions at the Hughes Law Office since January of 2016, and loves seeing families grow.
Tiffany L. Larson
Tiffany is a paralegal who brings more than six years of experience to Hughes Law Office. Tiffany joined Hughes Law in February 2016. Tiffany graduated in May 2014 from Alexandria Technical and Community College with a double major Associate’s degree in paralegal and legal administrative assistant. Tiffany is a native of Ortonville, Minnesota and has been living in Sioux Falls with her daughter since May 2015.
Jeryl L. Stafford, PLS
Jeryl “Jeri” Stafford is an administrative assistant and certified professional legal secretary. Jeryl graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. She is a certified Professional Legal Secretary. Originally from Mitchell, SD, Jeryl and her husband operated a Curves Franchise in Casper, Wyoming, before returning to South Dakota in 2009, where they are now closer to their two grown children.
Son to Beth and John Hughes, Evan studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston before returning to Sioux Falls. Evan serves Hughes Law Office as the Staff Assistant & office courier and is also pursuing his education in health sciences.
